AC: Hello, welcome to the Total Survey Design Podcast.

In this episode, we talk about what surveys are, what our goal is with this podcast, and what we will be discussing in this podcast.

My name is Azdren Coma.

SYL: And my name is Seon Yup Lee.

While many people think of surveys as simple and easy to put together, it is also understandable that some people find surveys intimidating.

Surveys can involve tens, hundreds, and sometimes even thousands of people’s responses and information – so surveys have to be created systematically – and they have to be analyzed systematically, which requires a basic understanding of statistics.

But surveys neither have to be scary nor overwhelming…

AC: I think this podcast will be useful for a lot of different kinds of listeners… like small business owners, people working in a nonprofit organization, any professionals in the industry, academics, both undergraduate and graduate students, or just anybody who wants to get better at understanding the surveys that we encounter every day.

Part of our inspiration for creating this podcast came from our own experiences. Professors in different fields have invited both of us on many occasions to give guest lectures on survey design. And we thought, why not create a podcast that could be easily shared?

SYL: We have planned a wide variety of episodes to kick off this season. Our very next episode is on the utility of surveys – or why surveys matter.

This season, we will also have an overview of how questions are designed, some common problems with surveys, but we will also cover more detailed and technical topics such as what total survey error is, how to determine your survey’s target population, or what is the right sample size for a survey.

SYL: One of the episodes that I am looking forward to the most is an episode on calculating the right sample size. Or, why just over 1000 responses is statistically enough to generalize the finding to the entire U.S. population.

Since one of our goals is to continue learning about survey design, we also aim to invite guests to interview on our podcasts, who could be from various organizations and various fields of expertise, as well as provide special coverage of survey-related events. We both work in what is known as the largest surveying organization West of the Mississippi, the Social and economic sciences research center.

AC: We aim to have between 10 and 20 episodes per season, with each episode being roughly between 5 and 15 minutes. Please subscribe now if you would like to stay updated with new episodes.

We also encourage you to reach out to make suggestions or requests for topics that you would like us to cover with more detail, suggest a guest to interview, ask a question about a particular topic that we may have already covered, or reach out to just say hi and that you are a fan.

SYL: We also acknowledge that this podcast covers a very technical subject, which means that we also understand we will make errors and mistakes. We welcome corrections to mistakes that we may have made throughout this podcast series.

AC: We will be responding to listener emails at the end of each episode.

Thank you once again for tuning in and for joining us on this journey. Welcome to Total Survey Design!
